A heads up for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. This dog show is coming soon February 15-16th. It is so fun to see all the many different breeds and how well they are trained. And then there is all the hoopla on the chosen winners in each category of working class, toy breeds, herding dogs, hounds, and non-sporting types. And, I don’t know about you, but I always have my fingers crossed for my favored doggos in each group.
Westminster Kennel Club was established way back in 1877 by a group of ‘sporting gentlemen’ in Manhattan, New York…New York City. They met at their favorite hotel bar in the city and decided to use their fav bar’s name for their new founded sporting dog club.
J.P. Morgan, their site says, made his first appearances in Westminster with his Collies in 1893. And, it continues, that famous American journalist, Nellie Bly entered her Maltese in 1894. Westminster is the oldest established non-profit organization in the sport of dogs.
Their annual show began in 1948. Today they have close to 3000 dogs participating from throughout the USA and beyond. They sponsor the Master Agility Championship and the Master Obedience Championship. See more about the organization at Westminster Kennel Club.org.
Rescues
The Westminster Kennel Club show is great and seeing all the various breeds and types of dogs is much fun. My little Maltese, Morgan, was a member of the AKC. But I think in today’s world we need to take care of and adopt all the many dogs available whether pure bred or not. And, of course the vast majority in rescues are mixed breeds. These canines are extremely trainable and definitely make wonderful loving and loyal pets and many prove to be champions in their own right.
We are so happy to see you this week and hope to have you come back soon. Please do leave your comments down on the left as well as your “likes” and let your friends and neighbors know about us too. Til next week, have a good one!

Last week I wrote about our Change a Pet’s Life Day and January 24th as that annual day. It is about upon us. Have you come up with a great idea for your pet bird, aquarium critters, feline friend, or your cute canine? If not, here is a pet reminder in “How to Change a Pet’s Life” – https://copywriternikkifrie.com/how-to-change-a-pets-life/. And, there are a few coming events close also which occur in February.
Coming Events
One coming event is Pet Dental Health Month happening throughout February. This is most important for our cats and dogs who can easily develop serious dental issues by age three. See “Dental Care for our Fur Babies’ for a refresher on signs of periodontal disease, care, and good USA-made dental products to assist in keeping your pet’s teeth in good condition: https://copywriternikkifrie.com/imperative-dental-care-for-our-fur-babies-pet-dental-care-usa-made/.
Another event designated for our pets in February is Pet Training Education. I mentioned this as a great way to enhance your pet’s life in my post last week. Even just a new command, or trick is great but to really go whole hog, agility training takes the cake! See my post “Agility Training your Dog” for some good information and tips: https://copywriternikkifrie.com/agility-training-your-dog-blog-post-akc-agility-training-backyard-training.
And don’t forget Super Bowl is almost here on February 7th for you football fans. Have you thought about getting your doggo or your kitty outfitted in your favorite team’s colors? Go to All Star Dogs in New Jersey and online for their licensed pet apparel…you probably still have enough time!

As mentioned previously, January is when we celebrate our pet birds, specifically on Janruary 5th. But also January 24th is designated to honor our pets by changing a pet’s life! And, of course, there are so very many ways we can accomplish changing a pet’s life. Just think about it and let me put forward or propose some ideas on how to change a pet’s life.
Adoption
Now, adoption, there is a real life-changing function for a pet cooped up in a cage somewhere waiting for his or her new family and best friend. And there are so many types of pets to choose from to fit just about any lifestyle.
Aquarium Fellas
An aquarium is most probably the easiest care and least time consuming option. And there are so many beautiful fish and other types of fun and active aquarium critters too. From Betas to gold fish to guppies or cute dwarf African frogs and snails or bottom dwellers. Colors of the rainbow to choose from too. Check out my post “Easy Care Pets” for some tips and guidelines: https://copywriternikkifrie.com/easy-care-pets-blog-post-small-aquariums/.
Feathered Buddies
Birds are another great choice if you can spend some time training and interacting. But again, so many options available. From larger parrots to a small parrotlet or canary, or a couple of budgies or lovebirds. See some information on several pet birds in my post “I Want a Pet Bird” – https://copywriternikkifrie.com/i-want-a-pet-bird-good-pet-birds-best-pet-bird-species/.
Canine Cuties
Doggos are definitely more time consuming but total loving creatures. And again so many sizes, breeds, dispositions, or activity inclinations to choose from that will fit right in with the things you prefer to do — hiking, playing, training, lounging. You name it, there is a great dog waiting for you. Check out some great resources in “Pet Events – Animal Welfare” : https://copywriternikkifrie.com/pet-events-animal-welfare-blog-post-prevention-of-cruelty-to-animals-animal-protection/.
If your best pet friend seems scared quite often or is jumpy, nervous, afraid of visitors, it may be time to look into an anxiety vest to help change their outlook and calm them down to enjoy their life more. Or perhaps some CBD made without any THC to help alleviate their fears. There are quite a number of good safe USA-made products on the market now to alleviate their tensions now. See my guest post for Healers Pet Care on their anxiety vest in “Body Wrap your Pet?” shown in my Portfolio, and also my post on CBD use and other options in “Pet CBD Usage Growing?” – https://copywriternikkifrie.com/pet-cbd-usage-growing-blog-post-pet-cbd-growth-new-reports-new-usa-manufacturers/.
Training and Activity
Calico cat standing up on hind legs, begging, picking, asking food in living room, doing trick with front paw, claws with woman hand holding treat, meat
Maybe your pet is in need of some new activity and attention. Training tricks and new commands bring you closer together.
Aquarium Guys
For your aquarium buds, just a change of scenery decor to investigate or a new treat might do the trick or possibly introducing a new pal.
Birdies
Your birdy friend might like a new toy or you might try to teach them a word or a trick. You could introduce them to their own bath or a new snuggly bed. But some good extra attention is always in order.
Doggies
If your dog is quite active have you thought about some agility training? Small or large, both sizes can excel and love this activity. Or just some good walks and maybe a dog park or two might be a healthy action. Extra play time is always greeted with enthusiasm.
Kitties
Have you considered teaching your cat to walk with you on a leash. Good information on just how to do this you can find through Tufts Catnip or at Maddie’s Fund. Or how about a new puzzle treat toy to keep them engaged. Teaching them a trick would be welcomed…that is, if they are in the right mood. LOL.
If you would like to brighten a pet’s life or consider using some of the pet life enhancing options above, please do and make a pet happy as your pet and show your pet some of the love they shower on you.
Remember to take advantage of our safe, quality USA-made pet products. Many are mentioned on my site. Check out my Category: USA-made Pet Products, on my Welcome Page.

Most of us make New Year’s resolutions, right?! How about considering some good New Year resolutions for our pets too. Following are some good ideas for our New Year Pet Resolutions.
Aquarium Dwellers
Our swimming buds could certainly use some new decor to investigate, or to swim through or into for fun. How about a new silk plant to liven up their space and maybe as a new sleeping spot.
Or, could they use a new treat. I give my Dwarf African Frogs a defrosted mini shrimp treat once a week and my snail a piece of dried algie he loves to rip off its holder.
If it is past time for a new filter or heater, better do it now.
Birds of a Feather…
If you are in a cold climate, think of trying a heated bird perch. Your birdy loves mirrors and new toys are always welcome. Or try some yummy fruit or veggie as a good treat. Or one of the gourmet treat sticks available.
A new nighttime breathable cover for their cage or a snuggly sleeping spot I am sure they would be tweeting about. ‘
Or how about teaching them a word or a new whistle note? More attention is always a good thing.
Note: National Bird Day was on January 5th.
Canine Girls and Guys
Calico cat standing up on hind legs, begging, picking, asking food in living room, doing trick with front paw, claws with woman hand holding treat, meat
Here you have so many options. But spending more time walking or teaching a new trick or a new command is great. Maybe it is time for those agility sessions.
Of course, a new toy or other distraction like a treat toy for alone times might be in order.
A new warm coat or booties for the cold weather is always appreciated. Or have you checked your leash and harness condition lately. Maybe a night time flash stripe is needed.
Have you tried a new natural delish food topper?
Kitty Cats
Plenty of fun choices available for these fur buds too. Do you think your kitty might like to sit outside in her very own catico? Or maybe be trained to walk on a leash?
Have you considered teaching your cat some tricks or a command or two. Interaction is always a good thing with our pets.
Of course they love new fun toys and even a good treat toy to keep them occupied for their alone time with some lovely organic catnip inside. A window sill perch I am positive your kitty would be purring all over the place and on you. Again, a new yummy natural food topper might be added to their food dish.
There you have some fun and easy ideas for New Year’s resolutions for pets. Don’t forget to check on your pet’s vet status also. Any shots due or a general checkup? And do remember to ask your vet about correct dosages for any use of CBD oils, etc.
Here’s to a happy and prosperous New Year for all! Thanks for stopping. Come back by next week and know that I do love to see your comments as well as ‘likes’.
l shared many of these fun Christmas facts last year and decided on re-sharing even more this year in case you missed out before. Or, you can browse through this great list of 100 Fun Christmas Facts yourself – https://www.thefactsite.com/100-festive-christmas-facts/. Following are 16 plus of the 100 Christmas Facts.
Did you know that Christmas was not actually accepted in the United States until the early 1800s. And Franklin Pierce was the first US President to place a Christmas tree in the White House back in the mid 1850’s. I wonder if he had a cat or a dog or both to share his new holiday scene? This day that is celebrated around the world was not recognized in the United States until the 1830’s.
Did you know that the ‘X’ in Xmas actually is the Greek letter ‘chi’ used by Christian scholars as an abbreviation for Christ’s name. So really, X-Mas actually means Christ-Mas, and as such, is no different at all! I now feel better using that acronym!
And, Christmas trees were lit by candles clear up until the 20th century…maybe the start of the ‘fire department’?! However, eggnog goes all the way back to Captain John Smith’s Jamestown Settlement in the 1600’s. Our pilgrims knew what they were doing.
We have two places in America named after Santa: Santa Claus in Indiana and Santa in Idaho. Also 50 states do grow Christmas trees and the average tree takes 15 years to grow before it is up for sale.
The name “Santa Claus” or “St. Nicholas” in Dutch became Sint-Niklaas or Sinter Klaas…so closing in on “Santa Claus”. “Christmas” comes from the old English “Cristes maesse”. “Noel” is from a French phrase meaning ‘the good news’ – “les bonnes nouvelles”.
The candy cane at Christmas originated 250 years ago in Germany as straight white sticks. I wonder by who and when the cane handle and red stripes were added?
The highest-grossing Christmas movie is actually Jim Carrey’s “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. Not surprising!
The Rockefeller Christmas tree is topped, as of 2004, with a 550-pound (249.48 kg) Swarovski Crystal star. Wow, that must be brilliant to see!
Many people’s favorite carol, “Jingle Bells,” written in 1857, was actually written for thanksgiving and was called “on horse open sleigh!”
And, in December 1965, Jingle Bells was the first song broadcast in space from Gemini 6. How appropriate.
Christmas was first recognized in the US in 1836. The first state was Alabama, and the last was Oklahoma in 1970. Why so far behind Oklahoma?
If you live in Canada and want to get a letter sent to Santa Claus, then you’re in luck – he has his very own postcode! Go for it kids! But remember to send it before December 10th to ensure that he has time to reply to you.
His address is Santa Claus, North Pole, H0H 0H0, Canada.
The gold chocolate coins we receive at Christmas are to represent the gold St Nicholas supposedly gave to the poor. What a wonderful idea.
The holly inside a wreath actually represents Jesus’ Crown, and the red berries represent his blood.
The star of Bethlehem that guided the wise men is believed to be a comet or Uranus.
Wishing all a very happy, merry Christmas and a truly great New Year! I will be off celebrating myself over the holidays. Looking forward to talking to you all in the New Year!

I have come across some good pet tips and tidbits to share recently in both Pet Age and TuftsCatnip. See some aquarium and cat tips following.
Cat Lovers’ Helpful Hints
Since December is Cat Lovers Month I want to share info from Tufts Catnip about a kitty disease named Ascites. It involves fluid in the abdomen and sounds serious so take a look in case this may be of help to your feline buddy. ” Accumulation of fluid in the abdomen is an important – and usually dangerous – sign of illness in cats. Here’s what you should know about it.” Tufts Catnip December 8, 2022 newsletter.
Another great publication by Tufts Catnip is called “It’s a Cat’s World…You Just Live in It”. If you would like some insights into your kitty’s brain, purchase this fun Tufts publication to understand some of your kitty cat’s mysterious doings. It is priced at just $14.99.
If you have a fairly new kitty who is having problems using the litter box, look at this info provided by Tufts – ” …litter box aversion, one of the easiest problems to solve if a cat refuses to go to the bathroom where she is supposed to.” The article is not about any medical problems, but the possibility of your cat’s aversion being a behavioral problem. To see it this might help your new kitty, read morehere.
Aquarium Master Helpful Hints
With our National Fish Day celebrated every December 18th, here is an announcement on a new aquarium product:
In their December 8th newsletter, Pet Age announced a new water tester device is now available from API Fish Care (Mars FishCare). They describe it as a “simple, precise digital water tester”. It is named API AquaSpin and takes just two minutes for results. See more info on this new product at API.

December pet events honor several species of pets. However, the entire month is National Cat Lovers’ Month.
About Adopting a Feline
An article in the December issue of Tufts Catnip talks about choosing a kitty for adoption based on their personality. They advise to take your time and visit the cat several times before making up your mind in order to see how they respond. So, depending on what kind of interactions you prefer to have with your feline buddy. Do you want an active and playful kitty, or a more laid back cat who just likes to snuggle in your lap?
It goes on to say that a good idea is to ask the rescue attendees what they have noticed in the cat’s behavior if it has been with them awhile, and they may have information on the cat’s history. Also, that rather than a kitty, an older 7 to 10-year old cat may be a good starting point since their personality has had time to form and show itself.
In any event, if you are just now considering adopting a kitty you might check out Cat Adoption Team in Sherwood, Oregon, and the Oregon Humane Society here as well if you are a local resident in my area. Otherwise, you can Google a great cat rescue in your own local area.
If you are a cat lover, December is your time!
