Cat Adoption Month USA is When?

Cat Adoption Month USA is when? All during the month of June we devote to adopting felines as well as celebrating aquariums. Have you given any thought to rescueing a kitty or an older cat to their forever home? Can you resist that adorable face and their loving purrs?

US Cat Ownership Facts

Pet Age tells us in their new Cat Guide that there has been quite an upsurge in kitty cat ownership in the USA during the past few years particularly during Covid. The 2021-22 numbers from American Pet Products Association versus the 2017-18 figures from American Veterinary Medical Association show a rise in cat ownership to 45.4 million or 35 percent of US households having at least one feline compared to 31.9 million or 25 percent in the earlier report. And with this rise the cat product market is coming more alive as well.

Another interesting fact the guide states is that the minority or just five percent of the adopted cats are pedigreed cats.

Rescue Sources

Kitty rescue 196 x 130

On that note for our National Cat Adoption Month, Pet Finder is a good place to start searching for your new best feline friend. You can find pets available for adoption near you and list your preferences for your desired rescue on their site.

You can also find good long established rescue organizations like the Humane Society of the United States, Best Friends Animal Society headquartered in Utah, and ASPCA since 1866. If you are local to my area the Oregon Humane Society near Troutdale is the largest rescue organization in the Northwest and the oldest in the United States. Two others for felines locally are Cat Adoption Team in Sherwood, Oregon, and The Pixie Project in Portland, Oregon near our convention center.

Before Adopting

You might take a look at my post “Pet Adoption Questions” for important questions you need to answer for yourself in our cat rescue month USA before actually adopting. Also “New Kitten” has some good training tips, especially on potting training.

Easy Pets

This post is following up my post “Easy Care Pets” which is about the care of a small 5-gallon aquarium and Dwarf African Frogs. There are quite a few more ‘easy pets’ to keep you company if you do not have a lot of time or energy to expend on a pet. And since June is National Aquarium Month, I am concentrating on pets fitting into that arena.

Betta Fish

large pic Red Betta 1880 x 1253
Photo by Chevanon Photography on Pexels.com

For a small aquarium, Betta fish are very gorgeously colored and formed creatures but they are definitely solitary beings. I tried to pair one with a small frog and had to get my frog bud a log to hide under. He ended up butting heads literally with my beautiful Betta. He survived for four fun years but it proved to be the end for my sweet and jealous Betta.

Betta Care

Bettas do need water conditioning and changing as well as Dwarf African frogs do and any freshwater fish. But other than washing every thing in very hot water and possibly lemon juice before inserting it in their water to keep the nasty critters at bay, a heater and filter, they really just need some betta food, a silk or real plant to lay on, and some of your attention. Although a fun floating log, a cave, or maybe some bling tiered rocks to swim into or through or lay on and investigate would be great to give them something to enjoy.

Note: Catappa leaves or Indian Almond leaves help to keep the nasty critters from invading the water and are good hiding spots for your swimmer pets.

Check out my post: Freshwater Aquarium Summer Care.

Other Fresh Water Fish

Dwarf gourami Trichogaster lalius tropical aquarium fish

Guppies, gold fish, tetras, gouramis, swordtails..the list goes on for so many colorful and fun swimming friends to choose for your aquarium. Just be sure to check on their aquarium needs with your local fish experts or API.com for great information. Or maybe a saltwater tank would be more to your liking. Check out the difference as well as the care needed. Add some fun elements to your fish tank. Then enjoy your new swimmer best buds.

Snails

Striped Nerite Snail 479 x 359
spotted nerite snail (Neritina natalensis) eating on a rock in a fish tank

I have had the pleasure of just two Nerite snails. My first named Dale, kept my tank scrupulously clean and lived a good long time for a snail..at least 3 years. My present guy, or girl?, is named Tigger and he/she is going on four years with a normal life expectancy of only one year! This fella has had several Dwarf African Frogs living with him. At present all my frog buddies have passed on and Tigger is still going strong.

Snail Care

He does need a piece of a bird calcium bar for his shell placed at the bottom of the tank. And I do give him a mini algae wafer once daily, sometimes every other day, and a dried algie treat when I change his water. It is in a suction holder on a tank wall and he loves ripping it off. And, yes, snails do need a heater for their water up to 80 degrees and a filter for water movement.

I haven’t brought in any additional snails because my friend who had more than one told me how fast and furious they tend to multiply. Yikes!

TerrAquariums

Hermann’s Tortoise

Herrmann;s tortoise popular pet 234 x 156

I just recently learned about Hermann’s Tortoise in writing about World Turtle Day just past on May 23rd. Hermann’s is said to be the most popular turtle as a pet in the USA. As an adult he is just 6 to 8 inches. His life expectancy is 75 years so maybe get one when you are young or bequeath your turtle friend to a good replacement pet parent.

You will need to find a breeder for your Hermann’s Tortoise. They run approximaely $150 to $500. They live on land mostly but also swim in the water.

Tortoise Care

A great spot for a terrarium and needed products and care tips is Zoo Med Labs.com. This creature needs a basking light or heat lamp and a basking spot, ie, a row of low flat rocks, with an ambient temperature of 95F and a 10 percent florescrent UVB tube light with a reflector so your turtle can absorb calcium from the light source for his shell. You will also need a substrate for digging of up to 2 inches of a combination, say, of sand, soil, and composted bark. They like to burrow to cool themselves and for exercise and activity.

This tortoise needs to be fed once a day and at the same time every day. Normally they like to eat from serveral food trays in their terrarium, eating leafy greens and grasses plus small bits of broccoli, cabbage, cucumber, carrot, apricot, grapes, melons, peaches, and strawberries. So a large variety to choose from for these critters. And you need to give them about 30 minutes to eat as much as they will. That is normally about as much food as the size of their shell, it is said.

Geckos

Gecko 220 x 158

The common house Gecko has a life span of 5 years and is found on every continent except Antartica. They live in warm climates and are nocturnal. Not a good idea to handle them as it can cause them to lose their tails. As an adult they are normally just 3 to 5 inches in length.

Gecko Care

They do need a tall 10 to 20 gallon terrarium with branches to climb and caves to hide in and this would accommodate just 2 geckos. Feeding for juveniles is once daily and for adults every other day, They eat live crickets and as a treat, meal worms. You would need to change their water daily and pick up their droppings. Cleaning would need to be done weekly for their entire terrarium. A list needed for their habitat is as follows:

10-20 gallon aquarium or vertical terrarium
_____substrate
_____shallow water bowl
_____humidity gauge
_____thermometer
_____plants and branches
_____misting bottle
_____heat source
_____vitamin / mineral / calcium supplement.

Daily temperature should be at 75 to 95 degrees and nighttime a bit lower at 65 to 75 degrees.

A leopard Gecko has a longer life span of up to 15 years and is usually 5 to 10 inches long as an adult.

Bearded Dragon

Lizard Bearded Dragon 525 x 350

The bearded Dragon has become quite popular as a pet since they can definitely be handled by their pet parent. I have seen these critters hanging from teen boys t-shirts. And I worked with a fellow who had one of these lizards and he brought it to work quite regularly in his truck.

Bearded Dragon Care

Life span for this guy is 10 to 15 years. They grow 16 to 20 inches in length as an adult. Young juveniles need a 20 gallon terrarium with daytime heat of 83 to 88 degrees and basking spots of 95 to 105 degrees. Nightime temperature can drop to 70 to 80 degrees. An adult requires a 40 gallon or larger terrarium. You will need a sandy substrate with several basking spots, and thick branches and good rocks to climb on and/or bask on. This creature also needs a UVB light for 10 to 12 hours daily.

See care information and products for bearded dragons at Zoo Med.com.

The bearded Dragon eats live crickets and once or twice a week good leafy greens and veggies with clean water daily.

The above are a few explained fairly easy pets to enjoy. There, of course, are quite a number more furry guys and girls too, like our guinea pigs. Do a Google search in the area near you to see what fits best with your lifestyle.

A Good Pet Bird for Me?

A good question to ask before adopting or buying a feathered friend: What is a good pet bird for me?

Pet bird 612/ x 612
Cute smiling girl playing with her pet green Monk Parakeet parrot. who is sitting on her shoulder. Quaker parrot bird owner. Exotic pet.

My Pet Birds

I have had two feathered buddies. My first was a surprise Christmas friend, who I named Noel and she stayed with me for 8 good years. A sweet parakeet. My second, also a parakeet or budgie, I named Skyli because she was the color of a clear blue sky. She was very sweet also but only with me for 4 short years. See my post, “Best Bird Friends”.

budgies teal and green Skyli and Noel 215 x 143

The Budgies I have had the pleasure of as pets, were fairly easy to take care of on a daily basis. Parakeets do poop a lot and need a paper at the bottom of their cage changed at minimum of once a week or sooner is better. Just keep their water and seed trays refilled and introduce some fruits and maybe a veggie. Give them a bed space and an occasional bathtub for refreshing, and keep them out of drafts. A fun mirror, a ladder, and maybe a bell to ring, and another fun toy to play with is good.

The seeds can be kind of messy to vacuum up. Other than the above, just some good attention is needed. I should also mention a good calcium bar for their beak and a rough perch cover to help dull their nails. And do get them a nice breathable cage cover for nighttime.

The one thing I found difficult is finding a good avian vet to help if and when they get sick. So that is a good area to look into.

Your Best Pet Bird Species

There are many types of great birds to choose from as pets.

Of special interest, may be the quiz on ‘your right pet bird’ mentioned on BEAK’s site. BEAK is a nonprofit organization that promotes responsible care of pet birds. Their site shows quite a number of birds available for adoption as well as retail stores offering pet birds. So depending on your tolerance for noise, how busy you are, what you want in a pet bird, and so on, they will show you some options and give you the percentages on different bird species as they fit in with your lifestyle. And, they will recommend the best one for you based on your answers.

You might also want to take a look at a post I wrote on many popular types of pet birds in “I Want a Pet Bird?”.

How to Spoil your New Feathered Friend

If you want to spoil your new best feathered friend, go to KH Pet for their heated bird perch or a cage warmer for winter chills. And for a great cage, try PrevuePet.com of Chicago, and Cozzzybird.com of Arizona for a fun cage cover.

For fun natural handmade bird toys see HootnHollerbirdtoys.com of Alabama and also see the bird toys by PlayfulParrot of Florida. Do remember some yummy food and delish treat sticks from Kaytee.com of Wisconsin which will have your birdie friend singing up a storm.

May 23rd = World Turtle Day

large pic turtle swimming underwater view 1733 x 1300
Photo by Belle Co on Pexels.com

If you are a turtle lover, as the title shows, May 23rd equals World Turtle Day. It was initiated as an annual observance beginning in 2000 and is sponsored by American Tortoise Rescue. This day was created “to help people celebrate and protect turtles and tortoises and their disappearing habitats around the world“.

I only remember having a pet turtle as a kid and not much more except that he was small enough to fit in the palm of my hand.

A great resource for turtles and tortoises is Zoo Med Labs of San Luis Obispo, California, who have been in business for 45 years. They care for 30 species of turtles and tortoises…several of which are endangered. They also provide habitats, foods, and, other necessary products for caring for your own turtle or tortoise with good knowledge of their care.

An interesting fact I discovered through Wikipedia is that World Turtle Day is promoted by dressing up as turtles, wearing green summer dresses, saving turtles caught on highways, research activities, and adopting turtles or tortoises from rehabilitation centers.

Sea Turtles

Sea Turtle 200 x 161

There are said to be seven species of Sea Turtles and all seven are endangered for a number of reasons: climate change, ingesting plastic and other pollutants in our oceans, poaching for their shells and their eggs, habitat shrinkage of ocean beaches where they lay their eggs, and getting tangled in fishing nets. Sea Turtles have been around for over 100 million years. Some fascinating facts about sea turtles from Global Animal.org:

  • Sea turtles live in nearly every ocean basin in the world and nest on beaches.
  • Around 60 days after the eggs are laid, hatchlings emerge and know to make their way to the ocean. As a side note, my niece, Jill, and her husband help these little ones with their trek to the ocean in North Carolina.
  • Sea turtles spend almost their whole lives at sea, except when adult females come ashore to nest several times a season every two to five years.
  • The Leatherback is the largest sea turtle in the world. (They can weigh up to 2000 pounds.)
  • According to the WWF, a female Leatherback once travelled more than 11,800 miles in a round-trip across the Pacific Ocean, from Papua in Indonesia to the northwestern coast of the United States.
  • Some sea turtles can live for 50 years or more.
  • These creatures feed on anything from seaweed to jellyfish, depending on the species.

Turtle and Tortoise Facts

I had no idea there were so very many species of turtles and tortoises until I started researching the information. As it turns out: “They are distributed across every continent except Antarctica, from South Asia to Canada, and there are approximately 356 species of turtles, including 49 species of tortoises (i.e., turtles that live on land as well as water and have more rounded, domed shells).

Reptiles Magazine has pictures and descriptions of all of these turtle and tortoise species. If you are interested you can take a gander through their information.

Difference between Turtles and Tortoises

So what exactly is the difference between a turtle and a tortoise? Tortoises have more rounded and domed shells where turtles have thinner, more water-dynamic shells. Turtle shells are more streamlined to aid in swimming. One major key difference is that tortoises spend most of their time on land and turtles are adapted for life spent in water.

Turtles normally live anywhere from 20 to 40 years while tortoises typically continue on 80 to 150 years.

Turtles are omnivores eating plants and meat while tortoises are herbivores eating only plants.

And turtle fins are more streamlined for swimming while tortoises have bent legs for walking on land.

Turtles are found mainly in Africa and America. Tortoises are mostly found in Asia and Africa with some in the Americas, like the giant Galapagos tortoise found in South America in the Galapagos Islands. This tortoise has a lifespan of 175 years. Wow!

Most Common Types of Tortoise

Most common to the USA is the GopherTortoise who lives mainly in the southeastern US. This guy digs burrows which provide shelter for over 300 animal species. He is normally 9 to 11 inches as an adult but can grow up to 15 inches in length.

Gopher tortoise burrower 236 x 156

The most popular tortoise as a pet here in the USA is Herrmann’s tortoise. This tortoise is said to have a fun personality and an attractive shell pattern. They hail from the rocky hillsides and forests of Mediterranean Europe. If you want one as a pet, do consider their longevity! Their life expectancy is 75 years. An adult size is 6 to 8 inches.

Some Fun Turtle Facts

Some fun facts compliments of Learning Lift Off:

  • Turtles belong to one of the oldest reptile groups. They are older than snakes, lizards, and crocodiles.
  • Turtles lay eggs and the temperature determines the sex. If the eggs are laid in a hot climate, the eggs are usually female, and if in cooler climates, they are normally male.
  • Most turtles can hide their heads when an enemy attacks them.
  • The largest turtle is the leatherback sea turtle weighing up to 2000 pounds, and one of the smallest is the speckled cape tortoise. It has a shell which is just 3.1 inches long and this guy weighs only 5 ounces.
  • In many cultures turtles signify patience and wisdom.
  • Also important to note is: “Tortoises and freshwater turtles are important seed and spore dispersers for many plants, trees and fungi. Snapping and softshell turtles are important scavengers that help maintain clean aquatic ecosystems.

Conservation Tips

Some useful tips, also compliments of Learning Lift Off, to help conserve turtle habitats:

If you spot a turtle on the road in danger of being hit by a car, learn the techniques to move it safely from Turtle Rescue League.

Learn how to help turtles live in their natural habitats.

And never take a turtle out of its natural habitat.

Adopt turtles from organizations like Pet Finder.com rather than buying one from a pet store.

Pet Cemeteries & Memorials Revisited

Since Memorial Day is coming up fast, I want to update my past post on pet cemeteries and memorials.

Local to Oregon

In “A Memorial for your Pet?” I listed four Oregon pet cemeteries including the Portland, Oregon Humane Society with their burial space closed. At present they do have no burial space in their Portland, Oregon campus but do offer cremation and euthanasia services. They also have a Columbarium area for a special plaque. Their Salem, Oregon campus, however, does have burial space in the Lila Kay Memorial Garden as well as a Columbarium area.

The three other cemeteries are still viable:

  • Green Acres Pet Cemetery (pictured above) is located in the Medford, Oregon area. Green Acres provides cremation and memorial services on site, along with markers, urns, and pet memorial keepsakes. They also take mules and horses.
  • Treehaven Pet Cemetery in eastern Oregon, the Pendleton area, offers burials and services as well as end of life pet memorials and monuments.
  • And the newest pet cemetery west of Mississippi, Forest Pet Cemetery in Ashland, Oregon at the southern Oregon Willard-Witt Ranch, provides markers and burials.

Across the USA

Boogie the Pug.com has a great list of over 100 pet cemeteries throughout the USA. Their 2019 list was updated in May of 2021. You can view it by state: Boogie the Pug.

The most interesting and memorable cemetery mentioned is Hartsdale Pet Cemetery in New York listed as a historic site from the late 1800s with over 80,000 animals’ resting places of just about every group you can imagine.

Services and Commemorative Items

There are several services available for cremation, euthanasia, memorial service, and keepsake items. A few in Oregon are mentioned below.

Compassionate Care is a service brought to my attention by my Hairdresser, Nicolette, of Splendor on 13th in Sellwood. This organization offers in-home euthanasia along with cremation services. They also have a good choice of urns and paw print items available. Nicolette used this service for her beloved cat and said this company helped her feel considerably comforted. They have locations in northeast Portland, Oregon and Oregon City, Oregon.

Dignified Pet Services offer cremation and memorial services out of their northeast Portland, Oregon office as well as clay or ink paw prints. They also provide cremation for large animals.

Forever Friends Pet Cremations serves southern Oregon and the Rogue Valley. They provide cremation services along with your choice of urn and quite a few commemorative products. One of many options is their wooden photo urn seen below.

Forever Friends Wooden Photo Urn

Rest Assured Pet Cremation in Eugene, Oregon appears to now be integrated with West Coast Pet Memorial Service which also has an office in Portland, Oregon. This group offers cremation and online memorial services as well as a large variety of urns, markers, and keepsake jewelry like the paw pendant of gold vermeil shown following:

West Coast Mem Svcs paw pendant of gold vermeil 279 x 176

West Coast Pet Memorial does have several cemeteries outside of Oregon located in California, Nevada, and Washington.

It is a very difficult time to lose a pet as it is any friend or family member. Some of the above services can definitely be of calming help in this circumstance.

I have found that writing about my past pets is useful and warming to myself. See my post “Pet Ramblings on All My Pets” and individual pet stories listed under the category “My Pets”. I still have my dog’s clay paw print by his picture.

National Pet Week + Summer

Double leashed dogs with owner on beach 494 x 600

National Pet Week

National Pet Week is celebrated the first full week of May. This year it is May 7th, Sunday, through the 13th. It was initiated in 1981 by the American Veterinary Medical Association to “celebrate the pets in our lives and promote responsible pet ownership”. Sounds like it is time to spruce up your pet’s domain and give them some extra special attention. You can see some great USA-made pet products to help do just that in “National Pet Day – Approaching“.

Westminster Dog Show

Also coming soon in May is the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show scheduled for May 8th-9th at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Queens, New York. Better have your tickets by now or get ready for the TV fun.

Time to Get Ready for Summer

If you don’t already have it, paw wax or booties (Healers Pet Care) for your furry friends is a necessity for hot summer streets. Also fun to have are splash pools from Cool Dog Splash Pool.com and cooling beds or perches from KH Pets. New leashes and harnesses are a good idea too. See BeBop USA.com. And, if you are water lovers, some safe water vests are musts. Collapsible travel bowls for your pets’ food and water are ideal if you are going on just a day trip or more from American Dog.com.

Topical remedies for your pets might be good to have on hand from Healers Pet Care.com. Some probiotic grooming and wellness products from Skouts Honor.com would be adventageous for after those long summer hikes and picnics.

Remember some delicious one ingredient, dehydrated, and frieze dried treats from Chasing Our Tails.com for your fur buds.

I want to reshare the heat graph for our pets in summer here because it is so important to REMEMBER TO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS IN A CLOSED CAR:

Chart of Heatstroke symptoms for pets 507 x 540

Pets on Vacation

Adopt a Pet!

Pet Shelter lady holding pup 600 x 400

It is coming up to that special time again to adopt a pet. Adopt a Shelter Pet Day is at the end of April, April 30th to be exact. So if you have been on the fence in this regard, go ahead and rescue an adorable kitty, or puppy, a bunny, even a turtle or tiny Dwarf African Frog. Just be sure that it is a lifetime commitment when you do adopt. I have linked to some questions to ask yourself in that regard at the end of this post.

Another thought, if you are a senior have you considered adopting an older animal or animals? Having a best pet friend to age with you might be a good fit for the two or three of you.

Pet Shelters

Some great Oregon shelters that I have mentioned in past posts are listed here. (https://copywriternikkifrie.com/pet-event-days-adopting-a-shelter-pet-blog-post-pet-adoption-questions-pet-adoption-services/) . Following I have written information on each of these groups’ adoption processes.

Oregon Humane Society

They have great pictures of cats, dogs, bunnies, even guinea pigs that are available for adoption with information on each animal. They are non-profit and use adoption fees to give continued service. For dogs the fees range from $55 to $600. For cats adoption fees start at $25 up to $200. All fees are listed for each individual animal

You simply check out the animal and their information on line, then fill out an adoption questionnaire online, and set an in-person meeting date. If all goes well, you are ready to take your new friend home. If your animal has been spayed or neutered here, they already have a microchip.

The Pixie Project

Check out their FAQs with pictures and info on available animals. Fees are listed for the dogs which range at present from $300 to $500. Cats are listed at $100 to $243 for two.

You will need to download and fill out their application and mail or email it to them. Then i it is time to schedule a ‘meet and greet’. The dogs are on a 2-week trial basis before you can finalize the adoption. Pixie does provide supplies which you can purchase if you keep the doggy. No trial for kitties. All their animals are spayed or neutered, provided some vacciines (see their site), and given flea and worm treatments.

Note: If you have other animals, they need to all be spayed or neutered for this shelter organization.

Cat Adoption Team

Cat playing with felt ball with bell 320 x 320

This group also has pictures with info on each cat available. You can either visit or apply online depending where the cat is located, at the shelter or at a foster home. All their kitties are spayed or neutered, provided with up-to-date vaccines, and microchipped. Fees range at present from $50 to $150 per adoption.

You can visit the shelter Tuesday through Sunday from 12 noon to 6 pm and fill out a short questionnaire or apply online.

Oregon Dog Rescue

Spaniel Pup with "OH NO" expression lying prone for Error 404 Page 510 x 340

The Oregon Dog Rescue does provide appointments for walk-in views. They ask that you look online or through their on-premise I-pad and have 2 or 3 animals in mind as they bring each animal out for viewing individually. You can fill out their adoption application online to start. Any animals you already have at home need to be spayed or neutered to adopt one of their dogs.

They will send an email confirmation for your 1 hour appointment. You will need to bring all family living with the animal to appointment as well as any other animals you will have living at your home for your meeting and interaction. You will also need your landlord’s approval in writing if you rent. If all goes well, you can take your new friend home the same day, as they do no “holds”. Their animals are all spayed or neutered and microchipped. The fees look to be $250 to $500 but I did not see fees listed on some animals.

Best Friends Animal Society

Best Frends Animal Society cartoon 200 x 113

Best Friends is the no-kill sanctuary in Utah with a network of shelters and rescue groups around the USA. They currently have 1600 animals up for adoption or sponsoring including dogs, cats, horses, bunnies, birds, pigs, and more.

They have excellent pictures and information on each animal along with the location of the animal. You can apply online and even schedule a 1 and a half hour tour in person or online. This group survives through their volunteers and donations.

A Variety of Pet Tips

Smiling long-haired tan dog with kitty on his head 225 x 225

Following are a variety of pet tips I have come across through several reputable sources recently.

On Pups Behavior

Reading through a woman’s magazine recently I came across a small article on the many uses of pennies. That caught my attention since it is nothing I have ever considered. The one use I especially like is to help you stop your doggy from barking at everyone and everything. All you need do is wash out a soda can and drop five to ten pennies inside. Tape the top closed. Then when your pup barks, just shake the can several times. Your doggo should be disrupted by the sound and stop barking. Just continue doing the same until your furry pal gives up the barking habit.

Maybe your doggo could use some agility training. See my post on same “Agility Training – Your Dog?”.

About Turtles and Tortoises

ZooMed.com of San Luis Obispo, California is celebrating International Turtle and Tortoise Week now, April 17th through April 21st. They provide tons of good educational information on their website and offer special programs for schools on the subject. They say they are spotlighting different species, care tips, and sighting locations this week. So, if you are a turtle lover, as my sister and niece, take a look at all they have to offer.

Knowing your Kitty Cats

In case you just brought a kitty into your home or are considering doing so, the following are a couple of good publications you might want to take a look through.

TuftsCatnip.com is offering a feline behaviorist’s take on training your cat with tools to help you in that undertaking. It is just $18 and is entitled “Think Like a Cat – How to Raise a Well-adjusted Cat, Not a Sourpuss”. The title alone had me “at Hello”.

Another I noticed from Tufts is “Your Cat is Talking, Are You Listening”. This one starts out explaining about all the different “meow” meanings, and the fact that adult cats only “meow” to we humans. And they continue on to explain how cats communicate with us. Sounds like a ‘good to read’ publication if you want a kitty.

Funny Animal Videos

Before heading out for the week, here are a couple of fun cat and dog videos:

Is it Safe for Dogs to Eat Deer Poo?

White tailed deer in woods 300 x 300

In the information I have researched regarding “Is it safe for dogs to eat deer poo?”, the opinions appear to be somewhat of a mixed bag. But overall, they recommend a good designed dog food is best.

So picture walking in the wooded nearby area with your dog who has run off ahead of you. As you catch up, you find him or her next to a pile of poop and your doggo friend licking their chops. Or maybe you don’t need a picture because this happens with your dog quite often.

Man walking his dog in woodsy area 300 x 200

Animal Welfare Institute

In a Farm Animal Report.com study from the Animal Welfare Institute, it is said that deer poop can be a source of nutrients and protein since whitetail deer, plentiful in USA forest areas, eat mostly woody plants, including many acorns which are protein, as well as grasses. Deer poo also does contain good lipids and minerals. And with dogs’ powerful sense of smell they are attracted to the feces actually smelling to them like a ‘treat’. The Animal Welfare Institute prepares comprehensive reports on the ‘welfare of animals used in agriculture’ and ‘promote strong enforcement of laws to protect companion animals’.

However, eating deer feces or any animal feces can be a sign of a nutrient deficiency, they say, in your dog’s diet. And the very best way to remedy this problem is feeding them good food designed for dogs. But, on a side note, deer poop may be a good addition particularly to a working dog’s food with its muscle building and energy boosting properties.

Wagwalking.com

But, again, is it SAFE? Can dogs get sick from eating deer poo? Well the best recourse is to contact your Vet and see what he or she might recommend. Eating any feces may cause stomach issues, with harmful bacteria, and internal parasites. And signs of eating poop causing sickness include diarrea, stomach ache, vomiting, even tooth decay.

The practice of eating feces by dogs is scientifically termed “coprophagia”. Wag reports: “Eating deer poop can put your pup at risk of developing intestinal parasites. This condition can be expensive to treat.” So it is best to rule this problem out from the gitgo through an exam by your vet. If your dog develops a medical condition as a result of eating deer poop, you will need to follow the vet’s recommended treatment plan, but in most cases, you can expect your dog to make a full recovery.

If it is determined their eating poop is a behavioral problem, there are several ways to change that behavior:

…”You may be able to change your dog’s behavior if you:

  • Keep your yard and gardens free of feces
  • Keep a tight leash on your dog when walking in areas where there might be deer poop
  • Use their favorite treat to distract them
  • Try changing their diet or feeding them smaller amounts more frequently”

“You may be able to use a citronella training collar. This type of collar lets you remotely release a citronella spray that will disrupt their thoughts regarding eating poop as they will no longer be able to smell it.”

Veterinary Source

I checked a good veterinary source, Patton Vet Hospital in Red Lion, Pennsylvania. That vet organization has 4.7 star reviews out of 5 from well over 600 clients.

Patton Vet Hospital re deer poo 300 x 191

They present their “lowdown” on dogs eating animal poo as disgusting since they do like to lick our faces. They report the risk of parasites from several forms of feces as follows:

Rabbit poo – dogs love and is not likely to be a problem.

Deer poo and farm animal feces (horses, cows, goats) – a sampling is not likely to present a parasitic problem.

Cat poo can definitely cause worms.

Dog poo can present possible parasites.

Raccoon poo should be avoided at all costs! They carry deadly parasites for dogs.

Their conclusion: “So, for the most part, if your dog likes to snack on stool, it shouldn’t cause serious illness.  But try to avoid having your dog eat cat poo, poo from unknown dogs and especially raccoon poo!”

Author’s Opinion

I don’t currently have a dog or a cat, but I believe taking fewer chances on any parasitic invitations into my animals would be my decision. So I would maybe let them “sample” deer poo occasionally..that is, if I actually knew what type of animal produced the poo. And that, to me, would be the big problem.

If I was certain what type of poo they might be ‘enjoying’, then I would just watch their behavior to see if it was causing any discomfort or vomiting. If so, I would stop, take them to the vet, and take the steps mentioned by Wag to stop their eating any type of poo completely. And if my dog enjoyed’ eating poo as “too much of a good thing”, I would find some alternate treats, as suggested, to deter that behavior. Also I would look into changing and enhancing their dog designed diet.

Do take another look at some great natural treats in my post ” Pet Poison Prevention Awareness”. And take advantage of great USA-made dog treats like Barkworthies.com’s antlers, ChasingOurTails.com’s single ingredient treats, ShamelessPets.com’s biscuits of blueberries, pumpkin, or salmon. Another excellent USA-made treat is by PetHonesty.com if you could use a calming treat.

NOTE: Remember April 11th is our National Pet Day. Time for special pet treats!

National Pet Day – Approaching

As the title says, National Pet Day is approaching just after Easter on April 11th. And, the entire month of April is aimed at Awareness of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. So, what might you do special for an animal this month?

Pets in America

Forbes Advisor gives us statistics on pets in American households as of 2022. In their study dated 2023, 70% of US households own a pet, that is 90.5 million homes. That number is up from 56 percent in 1988. Dogs are shown as most popular with 69 million in US homes. Cats follow in 45.3 million homes. Next are freshwater fish in 11.8 million households. Pet birds, bunnies, and ferrets follow along with reptiles and amphibians. The study by Forbes states that pet ownership here in the United States has “increased significantly over the past three decades” with a great number acquiring a pet during the pandemic.

Of course with the increase in household pets we also have pet insurance increasing to safeguard our pets as well as the pet industry as a whole which has grown to a whopping 123.6 billion up over 19 percent (106.3 billion) from 2020.

Since Easter is coming up fast maybe rescuing a bunny would be a great idea for your family or even just you alone. But in any case, if you already do have a pet or pets, think of some great ways to safeguard them during this Awareness oF Prevention of Cruelty to Animals month and see some special treats made in the USA for your pets for our National Pet Day following.

Love and Safety for your Doggo

Pet Shelter lady holding pup 600 x 400

Be sure to check on the safety of the food you are giving your dogs. There are several natural treats great to perk them up for USA pet day and then there are many that are harmful. Check out the list here in ‘Pet Poison Prevention Awareness”. And during winter, of course, many road salt type products are bad. Remember to check labels on products you use before applying them where your dog may get to them. And do always check your food labels in case of any allergy your fur friend may have.

Do try some good safe USA-made collapsible travel water bowls for outings by AmericanDog.Co in Commerce City, Colorado and perhaps USA-made pet stairs for an easier climb to your bed or sofa by Best Pet Supplies of Jamaica, New York – great for senior dogs, smaller dogs, and dogs with joint problems.

How about yummy natural USA-made chews of one ingredient from ChasingOurTails.com in Minnota, Minnesota.

Extra Love and Safe Keeping for your Cat

As with dogs there are several unsafe foods for your kitty and also some good natural treats you can use. Check out my post for cats in “Pet Poison Preventon Awareness“. Also do remember to check food labels for your kitty. And keep any chemical products you use out of your cat’s reach.

Also use a safety release collar and a harness if you walk your cat.

To celebrate USA pet day use some USA-made 100% biodegradable skin care, shampoo, odor, stain, and itch & ear products to make them feel so special and comfy from BestShotPets.com of Frankfort, Kentucky.

How about a treat maze or a puzzle feeder to get their attention and keep their interest from USA-made products of CatAmazing.com in Fort Lee, New Jersey. Be sure to include some delish USA-made treats.

You might think about a special meal from DrMartypets.com of USA-made frieze-dried raw organ meat, vegs, and fruit or pure catnip toys from USA-made products by DrPussums.com of Maine.

Special Love and Safety for your Bird
